About this unit
This Genre Writing unit offers you the opportunity to explore the hotly debated topics relating to genre writing – you will learn about the typical markers of a variety of genres, including romance, detective fiction and Gothic fiction. Genre-mashups and transgressive genres will also be discussed. You will also learn about fan fiction, which is currently particularly interesting due to its recent internet-enabled ubiquity.
This online unit by Open Universities Australia and Macquarie University is not purely theoretical – the approach taken throughout the unit is very hands on. You will have the chance to experiment with genres, which will help you to learn about how theory underpins and aids practice.
Upon completion of this unit, you will not only be able to identify typical genre markers, you will also understand how to fluidly incorporate them into your work. You will consider why writers employ certain practices, and how their work influences both their readers and other writers.
