This course is ideal for anyone with a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) background, looking to improve their grasp on the English language. Studying an English as an Additional Language (EAL) course, such as this Certificate I in EAL (Access) (22250VIC) qualification offered by The Gordon, will help you gain the skills to open doors towards further study or employment opportunities.
After applying for this TAFE course, you will be assessed and placed into an EAL course that matches your current English proficiency, meaning you’ll feel at ease studying with peers at the same level as you.
This certificate I course will look at developing your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, and cover topics such as employment and living skills, Australian society and help you develop strategies to move into work or further study.
Assessment will take the form of:

To be eligible for this course, applicants must meet the following entry requirements:
- Be an adult student from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities and a permanent resident of Australia
- Be interviewed and assessed by a trained ESL teacher to determine your language level.
Recognition of prior learning (RPL) may be available for skills and knowledge obtained through previous study or other relevant experience.
In this EAL course, the units of competency you may study include:
- VU21454 – Plan language learning with support
- VU21450 – Give and respond to short simple verbal instructions and information
- VU214444 – Identify Australian leisure activities
- VU21443 – Identify settlement options
- VU21451 – Participate in short simple exchanges
- VU21447 – Read and write short simple descriptive and narrative texts
- VU21449 – Read and write short simple messages and forms
- VU21446 – Use basic digital technology language and skills

The Gordon offers its students access to an array of support services, including academic resources and on-site facilities to help make your time on campus happy, healthy and supportive.
The Gordon Library and study support team is on hand to provide personalised assistance with everything from essay writing to note-taking, and also includes an English as an Additional Language (EAL) program for non-native English speakers. Tailored services are also available via the Aboriginal Education Unit and Disability Support Services offices. Career guidance can be sought from the Careers team at any time, and for anyone struggling with personal hardship, a free and confidential counselling service is available at both the Geelong City campus and East campus.
