Working and studying at the same time might seem like a handful, but with online courses growing in popularity, it’s becoming more possible than ever to do both!
Studying online comes with many benefits, one of them being the ability to work through a course in your own time. You can go to work during the day, come home, spend some time with your family and do some study later in the night. You can go to a café and listen to a lecture, or participate in a discussion forum while sipping on your coffee. You can run your business and still be learning on the side.
People who are already in the workforce may want to complete additional study for a number of reasons. It could be time for them to up skill, to specialise in a specific area or to work towards a new career path before leaving their current one. Students may choose to study online so they can devote more time to gaining work experience through internships, volunteer work or full-time or part-time jobs.
Completing additional study, whether it is a degree, short course or certificate, could benefit you in a number of ways. Upskilling will demonstrate to an employer that you are motivated and willing to adapt – perhaps even securing that promotion you’ve been vying after. Specialising (for example, in marketing) will allow you to steer your career towards the areas that you are most passionate about. Testing out a potential career before you jump right in is also a smart decision, and online study is the perfect way to do it without sacrificing your current job!
While they may be flexible, online courses require just as much effort and focus as on-campus ones, so it’s important to assess whether it’s the right time to invest your time. If you choose to go ahead, you will have the support of teachers and fellow students, incredible academic resources at your disposable and the flexibility to work it around your lifestyle. So with all the options out there, who says you need to stick to a stale career choice just because you have commitments? Online study could be your ticket to a new start.
