About Government study loans

If you’re looking to gain a nationally recognised qualification but can’t afford to pay tuition upfront, government study loans can help. These loan programs are funded by the Australian Government and allow eligible students to defer their course fees until they’re earning enough to repay them via the tax system.

Depending on the type of course you want to take and your residency status, you may qualify for:

  • HECS-HELP – available to students in undergraduate degrees who hold a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP).
  • FEE-HELP – for students in approved full-fee higher education courses at private and public universities.
  • VET Student Loans – for eligible vocational education and training (VET) courses at the diploma level or above.

Each loan type has specific caps, conditions, and eligibility criteria, and not every course or provider participates in these schemes. Repayments begin once your income exceeds the yearly threshold. Learn more about how these loans work by visiting the StudyAssist website.
