Animal Carers feed, groom, and exercise animals, and check their health each day. They give medications as told by vets and keep clear health records. They report changes in an animal’s health and assist during vet procedures.
Talking with people is a key part of the role. Animal Carers work closely with vets, shelter staff, and pet owners. They give clear advice on care, food, and behaviour. In shelters, they check animals for adoption and help new owners through the process.
About 27,200 workers are in this field in Australia (Jobs and Skills Australia, 2025). Each year, around 1,300 new workers join, showing strong demand. With more study or time on the job, carers can move into vet nursing, animal training, or wildlife work.
