About Natural Therapy
Natural therapy brings together fields such as naturopathy, herbal medicine, nutrition and remedial massage. Workers in this field look at diet, lifestyle and the body as a whole, aiming to support long-term health rather than treat one symptom alone. This approach has built a loyal following among Australians who want options beyond mainstream healthcare.
The job market reflects that steady interest. Jobs and Skills Australia data puts the massage therapy workforce at around 19,500 people nationally. Naturopaths form a smaller, more focused group of roughly 2,400 workers (2025 figures). Both roles lean towards part-time and flexible work, which suits people building their own client list.
Study paths differ by area. Hands-on work such as remedial massage is often taught at certificate IV level. Naturopathy and herbal medicine usually call for diploma-level training or a related bachelor degree. Course length and delivery format vary, so compare clinical hours before you choose a provider.
Cost need not be a barrier either. Government grants and Free TAFE places can lower fees for eligible government-funded courses in health and community services. With clear entry points at certificate and diploma level, natural therapy offers a real way to build a career helping others.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between naturopathy and natural therapy?
Natural therapy is a broad term for many holistic health practices. Naturopathy is one specific field within it, built on herbal remedies, nutrition and lifestyle advice. Naturopaths usually study a diploma or degree and join a group such as the Naturopaths and Herbalists Association of Australia.
Is accreditation important in natural therapy?
Yes. Accreditation shows your course meets national standards and supports membership of a professional body. Look for courses listed on training.gov.au and backed by the relevant industry group.
How does natural therapy fit into Australia’s health system?
Natural therapies sit outside Medicare, but many people use them alongside standard medical care. They play a strong role in wellness and prevention, often through clinics that mix both approaches.
Can I focus on one modality or study several?
Both paths are common. Some workers focus on just one area, such as aromatherapy. Others build a wider skill set by adding more than one qualification to offer more services.
Is this a good path for a wellness brand or product business?
Yes. Many graduates go on to build wellness products, run workshops or grow a personal brand around their work. Courses with business subjects suit this kind of path well.
