A Customs Officer applies and enforces Australia’s customs laws at all points of entry. These officers work for the Australian Border Force (ABF) within the Department of Home Affairs. They manage the flow of goods, cargo, and people crossing Australia’s borders. Their work is central to both national safety and trade integrity.
The ABF places officers at airports, seaports, mail centres, and cargo hubs from overseas. They inspect goods and papers, run searches, and check that customs and biosecurity rules are met. Officers also work with the Australian Federal Police and other agencies to tackle smuggling and crime.
Each officer needs both customs law knowledge and strong people skills. The ability to stay calm under pressure and make precise calls is key. Most Customs Officers build deep skills over time, moving into roles in intel, cargo targeting, or fraud checks.
The ABF provides a fully paid 12-month training course for new recruits. No prior study is needed to apply. Average pay is around $91,728 per year (YourCareer.gov.au, 2024). New trainees earn $70,477 plus 15.4% super during training (ABF, 2024). Demand for the role is stable across all of Australia.
