How to Become a Public Relations Specialist in Australia: careers in Public Relations

0 Course

Definition of a Public Relations Specialist

A Public Relations Specialist shapes how organisations talk to the public. They build PR plans, manage media contacts, and protect their employer’s image. Entry typically needs a degree in comms, PR, or a related field.

Senior specialists advise leaders on the PR impact of their decisions. They write speeches, handle media calls, and respond to bad press. Research skills are as important as writing in this role.

Specialists work with marketing, legal, and government affairs teams. They track media coverage and brief key people on trends. They link PR work to clear business results.

Around 32,300 PR workers are employed in Australia. The field grows by 1,300 each year (Jobs and Skills Australia, 2025). Seventy per cent are women. The median full-time weekly pay is $2,046 (ABS, May 2025).
