Definition of a Sales Assistant

Sales Assistants sell goods and services in retail and wholesale settings. They help customers, manage stock and keep the store floor running well. The role is entry level. It builds real skills in customer service and sales. These skills support career growth into retail management.

Core duties include advising customers on products, processing payments and restocking shelves. Sales Assistants also keep displays tidy, handle returns and take part in stocktakes. Some take on extra duties during busy trading periods.

The Certificate III in Retail (SIR30216) is the standard qualification for this role. It can be done as a 12-month traineeship through a TAFE or registered training organisation (RTO). Those aiming for team leader roles can go on to complete the Certificate IV in Retail Management (SIR40316).

Jobs and Skills Australia (2025) reports 562,000 people in this role nationally. Future demand is rated moderate. Around 9,500 new roles open each year. The median full-time weekly wage is $1,241, or about $64,500 per year. Average weekly pay across all work types sits at about $58,000 per year.
