Definition of an Interior Decorating Consultant

An Interior Decorating Consultant advises clients on how to finish and furnish their spaces. The role covers colour selection, materials, spatial planning, and styling. Both design knowledge and strong client skills are needed.

Most consultants hold a Certificate IV in Interior Decoration (MSF40122). Some progress to the Diploma of Interior Design (MSF50222) for more advanced work. Both qualifications cover colour theory, space planning, and materials specification. Some practitioners also hold degrees in interior design or architecture.

Core duties include client consultations, design concepts, materials sourcing, supplier liaison, and overseeing installation. Consultants may work in retail showrooms, run their own practice, or join a building or construction firm.
