Definition of an Enrolled Nurse (EN)

An Enrolled Nurse (EN) gives direct patient care under a Registered Nurse. ENs train through the vocational education and training (VET) system. They must hold a Diploma of Nursing (HLT54121) and register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).

ENs work in hospitals, aged care homes, community health centres, and clinics. Their scope includes clinical assessment, medication giving, wound care, and patient education. They work alongside Registered Nurses, doctors, and allied health staff to deliver coordinated care.

Strong development pathways are available. ENs can complete further study to become Registered Nurses. They can also specialise in mental health, critical care, or aged care. The NMBA requires ENs to meet continuing professional development (CPD) standards each year.
