Demand for skilled operators has stayed strong. Earthmoving Plant Operators are on the national skills shortage list as at 2024 (Jobs and Skills Australia).
The role needs technical skill, safety awareness, and sound judgement. Operators work to project plans, check gear before use, and do minor upkeep between tasks. They run excavators, graders, bulldozers, loaders, and cranes, depending on the site. Many hold licences for more than one type of machine.
Entry is via the Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations (RII30820). Some operators move up to leading hand, supervisor, or site manager roles. More study in project management can open senior paths.
Average pay is around $95,000 a year, with senior or specialist operators earning more. Around 90% work full-time, about 49 hours per week (Your Career, 2025). This is a stable, well-paid trade for those who like hands-on, outdoor work.
