This gives small groups of children a low-ratio, caring place to grow. The role sits within the National Quality Framework, which applies across Australia.
The minimum needed is a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care (CHC30125). Many hold a Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care (CHC50125). These train educators to plan learning programs, watch child growth, and meet the rules. Since July 2024, the Certificate III (CHC30125) is mandatory for most Family Day Care Educators nationally (ACECQA).
Educators use the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) to guide planning and records. They check progress through written notes and link findings to each child’s growth needs. This careful, ongoing review is a core part of the National Quality Standard.
The Australian Government is investing in the sector. From December 2024, a Worker Retention Payment funds a 10% wage rise above award rates for eligible educators (Department of Education, 2024). This will rise to 15% over the payment period. About 8,300 people work as Family Day Care Educators in Australia (yourcareer.gov.au, 2024).
