Definition of a Forensic Psychologist
A forensic psychologist uses psychology in legal and criminal justice settings. They offer expert reports, court testimony, and health services in some of Australia’s most complex legal areas.
The role needs postgraduate study in forensic or clinical psychology. You must then register with AHPRA. Those with an approved master’s degree in forensic psychology can also seek an area of practice endorsement.
Forensic psychologists work in courts, prisons, and forensic mental health units. Their reports help shape sentencing, parole hearings, and care plans for people in the justice system.
Research is also a key part of the role. Many forensic psychologists add to the evidence on crime, risk tools, and how well rehab programs work.
