A Provisional Psychologist is a graduate practitioner registered with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA). They deliver supervised clinical services while completing the requirements for general registration. This role is core to the Australian psychology training pipeline.
Provisional Psychologists conduct assessments, administer standardised tests, and contribute to treatment planning. They work under a Board-approved supervising psychologist across public health services, private clinics, schools, and community organisations. Each supervised hour counts toward the PsyBA’s 5+1 or 4+2 pathway requirements.
Professional growth is built into the role. Provisional Psychologists attend regular supervision and engage with current research. Passing the National Psychology Exam is required for most registration pathways. The APS offers associate membership and targeted CPD for practitioners at this career stage.
Registration is governed nationally under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law, administered through AHPRA. Meeting all skill standards is required for general registration. This includes supervised practice and the National Psychology Exam (Psychology Board of Australia, 2024).
