A Migration Agent gives immigration advice and manages visa applications in Australia. All agents must be registered with OMARA under the Migration Act 1958 before they can practise.
Agents look at visa options for each client’s situation. They prepare and lodge applications, act for clients during processing, and explain Department of Home Affairs decisions. Their work spans skilled worker, family, and employer-sponsored visa types.
The standard entry path is a Graduate Diploma in Australian Migration Law and Practice, offered at several Australian universities. Agents must also pass the OMARA Capstone Assessment before they can register to practise.
Demand for Migration Agents is rated very strong (YourCareer.gov.au, 2025). Around 2,800 agents are employed in Australia. Most work in law firms, corporate firms, or private practice.
