A quantity surveyor (QS) is an expert in managing costs on building projects. They estimate, track, and control the money side from the first design stage to the final bill. This role is central to every large construction project in Australia.
On large commercial or infrastructure projects, QS professionals plan procurement, write and assess tenders, and run complex contracts. They advise clients on value for money at every stage. A QS also tracks design changes and manages risk to keep projects on budget.
Most QS roles need a bachelor degree in Quantity Surveying or Construction Management from an AIQS-accredited program. Around 60% of QS professionals hold a bachelor degree (ABS Census, 2021). A further 20% hold a postgrad qualification. AIQS corporate membership, earned through the APC process, is the standard credential for the field.
Jobs and Skills Australia rates demand for quantity surveyors as strong. Growth comes from infrastructure spending, housing targets, and sustainable building. Median weekly earnings are around $118,000 a year (yourcareer.gov.au, 2025). This puts QS among the higher earners in the built environment.
